A mason’s or "brick" trowel is used to spread mortar and concrete. If you are building anything with mortar, a stone wall, brick steps, a flagstone walkway, you’ll be using a brick trowel to move the mortar around.
These tools come in various shapes and sizes. With a large brick trowel, you can move lots of mortar at once. This is handy if you are building a mortared stone wall with large stones and you’ll be using a lot of mortar. For smaller jobs, or if you need to work in a tight space, use a smaller brick trowel. Brick trowels are available at most home improvement stores.
When building something with mortar, a brick trowel serves multiple purposes. Use a brick trowel to move mortar from a wheelbarrow or bucket to where you are working. You’ll use a brick trowel to spread mortar between stones or bricks. You can also use a brick trowel to clean dirt and debris off the area where you’re working, and to scrape off excess mortar between stones. You can use the butt end of the handle to tap bricks and stones into place. You can even clean your teeth with a brick trowel. Just kidding, but when you’re working you’ll find plenty of uses for this handy masonry tool.
