I use dwarf boxwood shrubs in this tutorial on planting hedges. Dwarf boxwoods are traditional favorites in formal landscape design. Why? Because dwarf boxwoods are compact plants, are amenable to trimming, and bear dense, attractive foliage. This combination of qualities makes them a solid choice for short, formal hedges.

Many of the tools and materials required for planting hedges are readily available, usually in your own shed or garage:

  • Shovel
  • Rope or string
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure
  • Stakes
  • Soil conditioner or compost
  • Hammer or rubber mallet
  • (Optional) Spray paint
  • (If needed) peat moss
  • (Recommended) Work gloves

In Step 2 on the next page we'll put the rope, stakes and tape measure to work immediately....
