By , About.com Guide

These articles can be used by homeowners as a resource for facts about flowers and more. I wrote several stories this year on, for instance, shrubs and perennials offering standout flower color. The articles on this page were created in January-March, 2009; be sure to visit the other 4 pages of this 5 page archive to access links to articles with facts about flowers written from April to December of 2009.

1/03/09 - Ajuga Plants
Ajuga is a fast-growing ground cover that usually creeps within just a few inches of the ground. The species name, reptans, means "creeping". This is a groundcover with attractive flowers, but I provide one fact about ajuga that may dissuade you from growing it.

1/21/09 - Tricolor Sage Plants
Although Tricolor sage plants do put out violet-colored flowers, they are, in fact, grown more for their variegated foliage.

2/02/09 - Dwarf Pines
Dwarf pines aren't grown for their flowers, but for their foliage and compact size. I relate the facts on Japanese dwarf white pine here, a tree that at 10 years old stands just 3 feet tall.

3/01/09 - Stone Fountains
Learn how to build a rock fountain that can become a focal point in your landscaping.

3/10/09 - Witch Hazel: Yellow Flowers, History
Those stumped as to the origin of the name "witch" hazel need to know the following historical facts: European settlers in the New World used the branches of witch hazel as divining rods for dowsing; and the Anglo-Saxon wych means "bend" -- which is just what a divining rod is supposed to do when it detects water.

3/12/09 - Daphne: Flowers and Foliage
Daphne's flowers are fragrant and grow in clusters. The flowers are succeeded by small red berries (drupes). But the fact about 'Carol Mackie' daphne that makes it such an attractive shrub is its variegated foliage.

3/13/09 - Poisonous Plants List
Not all flowers and vegetation are benign, of course. You should know the facts on common poisonous plants in the landscape if you have kids or pets.

3/26/09 - Wolf Eyes Dogwood
Wolf Eyes dogwood flowers in late spring to early summer, for a period as long as 6 weeks. A fact of which novices may be unaware, though, is that the white "floral" display is due not to the actual flowers, but rather to "bracts."

3/30/09 - Bee Balm Flowers
An interesting fact about bee balm is that the pulverized leaves truly can be used as a "balm" to treat bee stings.

On Page 2 you will find more resources for facts about flowers, as well as for other aspects of landscaping....
