Although they do flower and produce dark blue berries, Virginia creeper vines are grown primarily for their fall foliage. Virginia creeper's fall foliage is very attractive, but if you wish to grow Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia) up the walls of any buildings, make sure first that you desire it as a permanent fixture. Once it gets a toehold, it's difficult to remove. Also avoid letting it scale any of your specimen trees, which these vigorous growers can damage by casting excessive shade on their leaves.

Just how vigorous a vine is Virginia creeper? Well, I've often noticed Virginia creeper climbing telephone poles on its own, using the wires as bridges to cross the street during the course of one short New England growing season.

Ever thought in terms of a "fall foliage ground cover?" Well, that's precisely what Virginia creeper can serve as, although I don't necessarily recommend it. I have some of these vines serving that function currently on my own property; but, frankly, it's just an area I've neglected, and I'll probably eventually remove the Virginia creeper -- nice fall foliage or not!
