Such is the case with the red maple in this picture. Other red maples have more of an oval form.
The fall foliage of maple trees is the lifeblood of the Halloween season. Sugar maples produce maple sugar, and Japanese maples are exquisite, but my favorite trees for ushering in Halloween are red maple trees. Often called "swamp maples," many a swampy area in the New England woods is ringed with these trees -- areas that display the earliest fall foliage each autumn.
