Work smarter, not harder. The builder of this stone wall did a great job of incorporating the existing ledge. Instead of making the ledge an obstacle, it became a focal point. If you're faced with a similar dilemma, whatever your obstacle, consider including it into your plans. Instead of the ledge being a challenge to overcome, it becomes part of a great design. Be flexible with your hardscape designs and use your surroundings to your advantage.
The same flexible approach is occasionally taken with the building of wooden fences where a boulder is present in the projected fence line. The landscaper willing to "go with the flow" build the fence right over the boulder. The result is fence that is much more visually interesting than the typical wooden fence.
