Outdoor Patio Tile

How to Choose Between The Different Types

From

Outdoor patio tile is a great option for flooring in an area exposed to the elements. Easy to install and able to withstand extreme changes in temperature (if the right type is chosen), this material also provides endless design possibilities. With countless types to choose from, you can transform your leisure space into a beautiful sanctuary.

Not all tiles are created equal. When installing your flooring, it is vital to use outdoor patio tiles that are manufactured to be installed outside. Choose a type with the following traits:

  • Durability. Choose an outdoor patio tile that will stand up to the elements. Some ceramic products and slates are too soft to be used outside. But porcelain and solid stones like granite are good options.
  • Water absorption. If you live in an area exposed to the freeze/thaw cycle, you need an outdoor patio tile that can withstand extreme changes in temperature. Porcelain has a very low water absorption rate, which is good. If water is absorbed by an outdoor patio tile and freezes, that process can crack and pop your flooring.
  • Non-slip. Outdoor patio tiles can become very slippery when wet. If you have used a tiled shower, chances are the floor was made with small tiles. The numerous grout lines provide more traction for your feet. Most patios are made with larger units and less grout lines, so use an outdoor patio tile that is slightly abrasive. A little bit of grit will provide traction when the flooring is wet.

Talk to your sales representative when shopping for outdoor patio tiles. When you're at the store, tell them that you're planning to use the product outside. They should be able to steer you in the right direction.
