Margin Trowels

Useful Little Tile Tool

Tile tool: a margin trowel.

A margin trowel is very handy when setting tile.

A margin trowel is a useful tool for tiling. You can use this tile tool for so many different things, like:

  • Getting that last bit of tile adhesive out of a bucket.
  • Cleaning off your notched trowel.
  • Helping to pop-up a tile after it's been set in adhesive.
  • Cleaning excess adhesive from the concrete slab.
  • Wiping off the adhesive you've smeared on your pants and shoes.
  • Applying adhesive to tight places where your notched trowel won't reach.

That last example of how to use the tool is the most important one. I never lay tile without having a margin trowel handy. It helps me with all the fussy work in the nooks and crannies. If you are a perfectionist and wish to "touch up" near the end of a project, a margin trowel is an indispensable tool. You can buy one at your local home improvement store.

Sometimes, it is the little things (like having the right specialized tool at your disposal) that make all the difference in DIY landscaping projects. This holds true whether we are talking about building patios (as we are here); about manual stump removal, for which a mattock is a handy tool; or even something funky like making scarecrows, where having simple items like safety pins and burlap at your fingertips make the job go much easier.
