Hollyhocks
Hollyhocks are tall perennial plants effective for the back row of a plant bed. Some hollyhocks have flowers so dark as to be considered "black."
Columbine Flowers
Columbine flowers come in numerous colors. Of even greater value than their bold colors is the exquisite shape of columbine flowers, shown in my picture.
Pasque Flower
Pasque flower is a low-growing perennial and sometimes spelled "Pasqueflower." The beauty of Pasque flower is that it blossoms early (around Easter), before its leaves emerge.
Lenten Rose
Lenten rose flowers are perennials with long-lasting sepals. The leaves of lenten (sometimes misspelled "lentin") rose plants are a dark, shiny green color that help set off its Hellebore sepals.
Scilla Siberica Bulb Plants, or "Siberian Squill"

Snowdrops
Snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis) can be grown in USDA plant hardiness zones 3-7. You can plant snowdrops under deciduous trees without worrying about low light levels, since the delightful Galanthus nivalis blooms before the leaves come out on trees.
Blue Hill Salvia
Blue Hill salvia plants are perennials in zones 4-8. Blue Hill salvia flowers throughout the summer.
Peony Plants
The Chinese peony plants (see picture) most common in the U.S. are herbaceous perennials. But peony plants also come in a woody "tree" form, which is really more of a shrub.
Caradonna Salvia Plants
Caradonna salvia plants, nicknamed "meadow sage," have strikingly delicate flower spikes. Caradonna salvia flowers are dark: a purplish-blue color.
May Night Salvia
May Night salvia plants are perennials in zones 3-9. May Night salvia flowers throughout the summer.
"Stella de Oro Daylily" or "Stella d'Oro Day Lily": A Gold Star, Either Way
Although individual Stella de Oro daylily flowers last only one day, the plant does an excellent job of reblooming. Hence the popularity of Stella de Oro daylily when seeking summer-long color.
Bleeding Hearts
Bleeding hearts are perennial flowers and favorites in shade gardens. Give bleeding hearts liberal doses of water after flowering to extend the life of the plants' attractive but heat-sensitive foliage.
Bearded Iris Flowers
Many new homeowners plant bearded iris flowers, remembering the fragrant plants from their childhoods. It is specifically fragrant bearded iris flowers with which I deal here; not all of them are created equal!
