You should still apply tree fertilizers to older specimens. Here's why and when....
Answer:

In general, fertilize trees in spring. This will result in surprisingly vigorous new growth, including a thicker leaf canopy. The foliage will also display a richer color as the result of the application of tree fertilizers.
