First of all, areas between the front walk and house, such as your little garden, are often under heavy foot traffic (or if they aren't currently, then perhaps they were at some time in the past) and have become compacted. So the condition of the soil may be your biggest problem. One way to correct the problem is through soil amendments; but for a little garden, it's often easier to build a raised bed and fill it with new soil. You can modify the instructions in my 10-page tutorial on raised beds to suit your own needs.
Secondly, since you say that the "little garden gets morning sun only," opt for shade plants in this area.
