Question: What Makes for an Attractive Rock Garden Design?
Reader, Candace writes, "I am looking for an attractive design. The rock garden contains cactus, yucca and salvia on one side and a pile of rocks on the other."
Answer:

You can begin with the information in these rock garden design resources:

The principles of landscape design that apply elsewhere in the yard also apply to rock garden design. For example, be sure to vary plant form and texture in your selection and arrangement of plants. I would juxtapose yucca and plants with the same sunlight / water requirements that have a foliage of finer texture, such as Angelina sedum.

Mix in plants such as Pasque flower for additional -- albeit seasonal -- color. And, of course, never underestimate the effect that the appearance and placement of the rocks, themselves have on rock garden design.
