Flagstone is a natural paving stone.

Ken O'Neill and I continue our conversation about paving stones used around pool decks and spa decks. This segment of the interview will focus on the types of paving stones from which you may choose. But first, let's discuss terminology.

People use the terminology "paving stones" rather loosely. The first thing to realize is that these building materials aren't necessarily stones, in the literal sense (i.e., natural rock). Secondly, while some folks may use the terminology "stone pavers" and "paving stones" interchangeably, I don't (at least for the purposes of this article). For the sake of clarity, I prefer to make a distinction between the two, whereby "paving stones" is the umbrella term, while "stone pavers" refers to the sub-class of natural materials under that umbrella.

Paving stones can be classified as either natural or manufactured:

Examples of natural paving stones (i.e., "stone pavers"):
  • Flagstone
  • Bluestone

    Examples of manufactured paving stones:
  • Brick pavers
  • Concrete pavers

The paving stones mentioned below are concrete pavers.

Q. What are some of the most popular paving stones for pool decks and spa decks, Ken?

A. There are many types. It is important to explore options including seeing actual samples of products before making a decision. Our Dublin, Mega Bergerac, Bergerac and Holland lines are very popular among homeowners installing pool decks or spa decks.

Q. Please give us a brief description of these products.

A. The Dublin paving stones are part of our "Antiqued" collection, as are Mega-Bergerac (which includes the largest pieces available) and Bergerac. That is, we have a patented antiquing technology allowing us to give the paving stones an Old World appearance. The gently distressed surfaces and worn edges create the effect of cobblestones you might encounter in Ireland or the Mediterranean.

The Holland type belongs to our "Classic" collection. Their exceptional strength and durability combine with a range of captivating color blends. Their classic brick shape makes possible a myriad of applications.

Q. What are some popular colors currently being used for paving stones? How do homeowners and their designers decide which materials or colors to use for a project?

A. The colors people prefer depends on the region, but earth tones are very popular as well as more natural creams to match local limestone. Homeowners and designers in various regions tend to favor specific colors for exterior spaces, oftentimes based upon color trends of the area or nearby landscapes, deserts or mountains. A cohesive color design is recommended to juxtapose with the home’s exterior and surrounding plant material, furnishings, and the pool and spa.
