What Plant in March Is Most Special to Me
Snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis).
Why I Find This Plant Special
Snowdrops are one of the earliest bloomers of the growing season. If you wish to rush spring, this is the plant to do it with. What Region/Zone I Live In
I live in zone 5.
How I Would Describe the Plant
Snowdrops only grow a few inches high and have a small white flower that nods down. Besides the three outer petals, there are three inner ones that form a sort of cup. The leaves are spiky, like fat blades of grass.
Why I Think It Merits "Plant of the Month" Status
Snowdrops bloom ridiculously early in the year. They are right up there with aconite in this respect. That's what makes them so special. They are also low-maintenance: you never have to do anything special for them. No watering, fertilizing, trimming, deadheading, etc. Yet with all that neglect, they come up faithfully and bloom year after year.
What I'd Do Differently
- My snowdrops right now are contained in a small area. That's because I don't have much room in my yard. But if I had more room, I'd divide them as they multiply and create vast swaths of them. Since they are not showy plants, they look best massed together -- the more the merrier!
